So You Want To Be A Beachcomber

If you enjoy going to the beach near where you live, or perhaps where you go on holiday, you might consider doing some beachcombing. It is very fun to discover fascinating and possibly valuable trinkets in the sand. Perhaps you will find one or more things that are worth a lot of money. But even if you just want to prospect on the shore for personal amusement, a beach walk is an excellent way to get some fresh air and exercise.

In order to get the best results from your beachcombing excursion, try to time it so you will be there when the tides are low. This will increase your chances of spotting something that has just washed up, and grabbing it before anyone else does. You may also want to try to find a less popular beach, where there are fewer people also looking for treasures, to decrease the competition. But do not go anywhere on your own where there are no other people, for personal safety. Invite a friend along who also loves the ocean.

Do be sure to have some basic supplies with you to make the trip easier and more fun. Some plastic bags or rigid containers will be necessary to carry whatever items of interest you may find. If you prefer to have your hands protected from wet sand and whatever else you touch, some latex, vinyl or other waterproof gloves will be necessary. Because you will be trekking a lot of sand back to your vehicle, having a cordless handheld vacuum available will avoid grittiness on seats and floor mats. You will want to have towels as well as water or other drinks, and protection from the sun in the form of sunscreen or a hat. And if you wish to make the investment, a metal detector can be handy for finding coins and jewelry buried under the sand’s surface.

If you are lucky in your prospecting, you may find some beach glass. This is much sought after by collectors and also by jewelry makers, who fashion it into unique pieces such as pendants and rings. Beach glass is bits of broken bottles or other objects that have been worn smooth by being tumbled around in the ocean for long periods. This, as well as contact with sand and other materials, produces a frosted look and texture.

Another item much sought after by beachcombers is, of course, jewelry. People who go swimming and surfing sometimes lose jewelry of all sorts in the waves. Both ladies’ and men’s watches, finger rings and toe rings, and other such items can come off in the water and eventually be washed ashore. This is where a metal detector might be an advantage, but you may still find a lot of good things just by careful looking.

When you return from your beachcombing excursion, the fun begins of inspecting your treasures and perhaps finding something of financial value. First, though, you need to find an area where you can spread them out and work on them. If you have a garage with a work area, that is excellent, or else perhaps a computer workstation desk you are no longer using. These generally have several levels of shelves and storage spaces that are ideal for this purpose.

Now that your treasures are arrayed in your work area, you can polish them up and admire them more fully. Depending on the materials you are working with, you may want to investigate cleaners and solvents for removing grime, tarnish, and so forth. Also nice to have is a set of brushes for getting dirt and sand out of crevices. Old but clean makeup brushes can be good for this purpose. Finally, you can look online at collectibles websites to see if you have something of real value. But whether you sell your treasures or keep them to admire, you have had a fun time collecting them.

How A New Place Can Give You A Fresh Start

No matter what the situation is that leads you to move into a new place you end up with a great opportunity to have the ability to clarify your goals and your environment. Moving into a new place far away or just down the street provides you with a clean, fresh slate to start your work. Creating an environment that will help you remain focused on new goals isn’t hard at all.

Before you move, clean. Nobody will do a better job cleaning the dust bunnies and the corners than you will. So bring forth the Hoover Windtunnel bagged vacuum that you packed in the back of the van and give it a good once over. Visually, your efforts and cleanliness will give you a great starting point when it comes to rearranging your goals.

The bedroom and the bathroom are two areas that you spend time in during the morning hours as well as the last hours before sleep. Creating a great set up here is good for an emotional boost. A simple new bedding collection can give you a nice refreshing outlook in the morning and send you off the sleep with renewed vigor for tomorrow.

The bathroom can become a special place for self pampering. Spend time on the decorating, and be willing to splurge on some of the best eye cream or the best fragrance that you can find. The bathroom is your daily reminder to care for yourself on a regular basis.

Give yourself a few days to check out what you might need to give more attention to. In many cases you might find that there are areas of your new place that are still too related to the old place. Change it. Whether that requires some rearranging or buying something new, the sooner you change it the more your new environment will support your new fresh start.

When you are working on giving yourself that new start and a new environment you might want to take a few moments to reflect on how your goals are matching your interior efforts. Write a few goals down and see how you can set up your home in a way that will be beneficial to making sure you stay focused.

If your biggest goal is learning to be more organized so that you end up being more responsible, then by all means set up your place in way that will make perfect sense to help you along. If you have another goal related to being able to create happiness wherever you go, how is that evident in your efforts now? We can be crafty and help ourselves by creating an environment that we feel we can grow in.

Composters Stepping It Up To A Whole New Level

There are several eco friendly businesses that can be found online today. One example of a great company dedicated to advancing sound environmental sanitation ideas and products is Envirolet®. They build some of the highest quality composting toilets that are in use in many homes today.

What is a composting toilet?

In contrast to septic systems which use anaerobic decomposition, a compost toilet is aerobic. This means that the system depends on oxygen alone for the decomposition of the waste material. In general, the innovative toilets are low flush if they use water at all. Some are totally waterless which as you can imagine will save a lot of money long term. For the person who is into gardening and has a need for compost or fertilizer, this can be a really reliable and environmentally perfect choice.

There are many benefits to utilizing the Envirolet® waterless toilet or some other brand of composting toilet system.

1. Many towns throughout the U.S. now offer rebates to homes that are using compost toilets for their waste management. It is wonderful to see communities coming together to fight the cause for the things that will ultimately help the environment or at least cause decline in the current trend of harm.

2. As noted above, the use of such a low flush or waterless system can greatly decrease your household utility costs. In today’s economy, every penny in our budget counts, so this savings can be very noticeable especially to bigger households.

3. Using such a system will definitely help to promote a positive impact on the environment. If more people would get on board with this plan, it would greatly reduce water contamination and water usage in general. This is an important thing to consider when we think about how our current actions affect our children and grandchildren for years in the future. We must think about the implications of everything that we do right now that does affect the world of which we live.

4. Many of these toilet systems allow for anything that is alive in nature to be disposed of. This means that you could completely do away with the compost bin that you’ve been using for kitchen waste and put everything into the one solution. If you practice an organic lifestyle that includes your own garden, this would be a great system for you to consider for the household. Your toilet will now be creating the compost that you can use to fertilize your garden, thus saving dollars on gardening costs as well as utility bills.

Recently, I had the awesome opportunity to spend a few months in Dublin, Ireland. I was amazed at the wonderful system that is in place there for making it easy for households to be environmentally conscious. Many households keep a small green bin for organic material in their kitchens. The meal time clean-up includes making use of this bin and almost nothing food related goes into the actual trash can. The town then collects the material from these small bins and households on a regular basis. I loved this and hope that more cities and particularly places in the U.S. would be fast to get on board with this idea.

For the avid composter, the Envirolet® composting toilet is a natural progression in the enironmental friendly lifestyle that you are currently used to. Consider this choice now or in the future as something that can help to align you on your path as you fight for health and a clean environment.

Green Checks Will Help You To Make Your Mind Up When Buying A Used Car

There is plenty of information available on the efficiency of brand new cars and when you buy one you will be inundated with this information. The car dealer knows that by plying you with positive information about the car there will be more chance that you will want to buy it. This is even more likely if the car is environmentally friendly or if it is very economical on fuel.

With more and more people becoming more energy conscious and more aware of damaging CO2 emissions, it is more important than ever that cars are producing less. So when it comes to buying new cars, how friendly a car is to the environment can be very important. But does the same apply to used cars? Fuel efficiency and friendliness to the environment are things that will concern used car buyers as well. And for most of us, how economic a car is, can be extremely important especially due to the recession and the ever increasing prices of fuel.

You might be pleased to know that there is a company that is making sure that used buyers can get the same kind of information that brand new car buyers get. HPI are car data specialists and they are offering a service where they will provide these details on any used car you are thinking of buying. If you want to find out information such as running costs, CO2 emissions, fuel efficiency and other vehicle history then you can get it from HPI. This information can be extremely useful in helping used car buyers to make their minds up about which used car they would like to buy.

So that is why it could be worth your while paying HPI to do a check before you buy a used car. It will enable you to see how fuel efficient a particular car is and whether or not it is environmentally friendly. This information is so specific to the used car you are buying that it would be silly not to avail of this check. You will be happy that you parted with £19.99 for one of the valuable checks.

When you think it’s time to look out for used cars, you are always better off trying to research your vehicles beforehand. This research will let you find the best cars available for each category you look at. Once you’ve finished, you could find youself driving away from the dealers in a used vauxhall vectra or even a used ford ka.

San Diego to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emmissions

Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32, 2006) calls for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in California to 1990 levels by 2020. All we have to do to fix the problem is to determine emissions goals for cars and light-duty trucks and give the automaker their marching orders, right? Well, no. There’s a smarter way to go about it.
If we continue to assume that people will keep driving cars, and that the population is expected to increase, the carmakers alone are not going to be able to solve the problem.

What about changing the existing assumptions? What if people didn’t have to drive as far? What if a lot more people used public transportation? Could thinking like that, combined with lower emissions from the biggest polluters, enable us to reduce greenhouse gasses (ghg’s) in spite of an increase in population?

Enter Senate Bill 375 (SB 375, 2008), which requires a reduction of ghg’s to 1990 levels from new land development or redevelopment projects. Additionally, it calls for a technical advisory committee which will make recommendations to the California Air Resource Board (CARB) detailing how we are to reach the mandated goal.

So where does this committee come from? Who has the skill and knowledge to put together such a long-reaching plan? Twenty-one professionals have volunteered their time and talents to make this happen. For the most part, they fall into two groups: organizations who want their cities and counties to thrive and organizations whose goal is to reduce emissions. While these goals may seem to be at odds, the job of the Regional Targets Advisory Committee (RTAC) is to make a plan to do both at the same time.

Who is representing our community’s varying interests? Ten committee members are involved in local government and city planning, five are involved in public transportation, five are from organizations that support environmental issues, and one from a California new home builder. They hail from all over the state – big cities and rural areas as well as colleges and non-profits.
The committee must submit its report to the California Air Resources Board at the end of September. In the next two months, they will put together recommendations of actions and measurements that will enable each region to meet the required goals, taking into consideration the capabilities of each entity and current and projected economic factors. No small feat.

In the end, their accomplishment will be one that could not have happened without such a multi-discipline long-term commitment. This is the only kind of effort that can possibly make a significant dent in greenhouse gasses in California.

Pictures Of The Aral Sea Shrinking

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan both share the Aral Sea, a body of water that is steadily disappearing. A picture of ecological and health effects of Soviet eco-engineering, the Aral Sea has been constantly changing. The Soviet Government took 1940’s payday loans of water from the Aral Sea. The water level of the Aral Sea has been dropping since then.

History of Aral Sea diversions

The Soviet government started building canals to divert up to 60 cubic km per year as part of the “Great Plan for the Transformation of Nature”. Before the diversion, the Aral Sea had 68,000 square km of water. The goal of this plan was to irrigate desert cropland to grow crops like cereal, melons, cotton, and rice. As a result of this plan, Uzbekistan is now a world-class cotton exporter.

Shrinkage of the Aral Sea

The Aral Sea was diverted as part of the Soviet Government’s loans for people with bad credit. The Aral Sea started shrinking after twenty years of diversion. There were several factors that caused the Aral Sea to disappear. Agriculture diversions started causing significant water drops. Evaporation also caused a significant drop in the Aral Sea. A large project intended to refill the Aral Sea was also abandoned in 1986. By 2004, the Aral Sea was less than one-quarter its original size.

Ecological and economic impacts of the Aral Sea

The Aral Sea had been a major hub of fishing and commerce. The fishing economy has practically disappeared since the Aral Sea started dropping. Toxicity of the Aral Sea has also increased because of rising salt levels. Because of industrial, chemical, and agricultural pollution that ran into the Aral Sea, the dirt and dust now blows into toxic dust storms. The Aral Sea shrinking has also been blamed in the extreme temperature changes in the area.

Restoring the levels of the Aral Sea

Some groups have been working to restore the Aral Sea. Many countries as well as the World Bank and UNESCO have worked to restore the Aral Sea. Major projects have increased the sea depth by about 98 feet, though the likelihood that the Aral Sea will return to its former glory are minimal.

Generators For Home Use or Solar Power

Posted by admin | Posted in Eco Friendly Community | Posted on 20-06-2010

Every year, the environmental problems are getting worse. Global warming, pollution, and other concerns are now very evident. Many environmentalists are now taking an active part in the hope of saving the world before it’s too late. One way to effectively address such problems is by using solar power. With many households and establishments using generators to back up their power supply, which do you think is the best choice?

Power failure happens in the most unexpected hours and so having generators for home use can provide the needed power. The portable generators are widely used and you can even find large generators that provide emergency power. If you want to help in reducing pollution and other environmental problems, why don’t you opt for solar power instead?

The initial cost is a very important thing to consider but you will also need to look in the benefits that you can gain the future. Installing a viable solar power system can be a little bit expensive than just purchasing a portable generator. However, once you’ve installed the power system, you can already enjoy free unlimited power supply. Maintenance is minimal and you will not spend huge money on it. You don’t need to buy fuel just to run the system because the energy of the sun fuels the solar power system. In a portable generator, you will need to buy fuel to run it and so you will continue to spend money to enjoy power supply.

Generators can be purchased easily, online or locally, and so it’s quite convenient to obtain them. On the other hand, solar power is not that convenient to install and purchase as well. The market for solar power is rather small but because of the technological advancements, the market will soon grow. Today, the best way to obtain solar power kits is through the internet. Anyone can settle for a little bit of inconvenience especially if huge benefits are involved. Besides, after the installation of the solar power system, you don’t need to monitor it often unlike in generators where you will refill the fuel, change the oil and filter, and two times servicing in a year. The solar power system can last for twenty years even with minimal maintenance.

Both solar power and portable generators are efficient. However, when it comes to cost-efficiency, solar power is ahead. As long as the sun shines, energy can be generated. The system can also store energy so that it can be used at night or during rainy days. In a generator, you will need to re-fuel from time to time. You will need to pay for the fuel every time. Sunlight is free but fuel is not and so the cost efficient option is very obvious.

In terms of dependability, solar power and generators are almost the same. Solar power is best used in places where there is bright sunlight all throughout the year. If the period of bad weather is lengthy, all the stored power can be consumed. Generators can be used whether it’s sunny or rainy but the problem lies with the source of fuel. If you can’t refuel the generator, it will not work.

It’s your choice whether you will use solar power or portable generators for home use. It all depends on your capacity to pay for the device. You can evaluate further these two by reading this article carefully.
